Thomas Oslund

Principal/Partner and Director of Design | FASLA, FAAR

Tom is considered one of the leading design landscape architects in the country. Tom’s interest in art and his passion for design are fueled by a commitment to excellence and innovation. Tom has more than 35 years of experience at a variety of project scales from 800-acre master planning efforts to a 5000-square foot rooftop garden. Tom is known for designing engaging landscapes for some of the most discerning local, national, and global clientele. The studio he established in 1998, O2 Design (formerly oslund.and.assoc.) has consistently produced award-winning work, tallying over 65 local, national, and international awards.

Tom received the Star Tribune “Artist of the Year” Award in 2012 for his integration of art in urban design. His belief in the collaborative process of working closely with clients, architects, engineers, fabricators, and artists has yielded positive results and international recognition as an innovator when it comes to solving complex site design challenges. Tom has also taught and lectured world-wide on his work.

Jay Coatta

Managing Principal/Partner

As a founding partner, Jay brings a passion and entrepreneurial spirit to any situation that can confront a design firm. As managing partner, Jay is responsible for the day to day operations of O2 Design (formerly oslund.and.assoc.), including all financial affairs, contracts, staff performance, and balancing of current work load schedules. Jay’s background in business has provided a sound foundation for office procedure and responsiveness to our clientele. His methodology of balancing value, quality, and fiscal responsibility have been the cornerstone of success for O2 Design. Over the past 18 years, Jay has embraced the complexities of managing a design firm within an ever-changing economic environment. His abilities and creative approach to managing change within the profession – both technologically and fiscally – has ensured that O2 Design remains current and competitive in the marketplace.

His interest in golf and skill level led him to earn medalist honors in the 1993 U.S. Mid-Amateur Tournament. That interest has led to the involvement of O2 Design in many golf course and resort master planning and design efforts.

Tadd Kreun

Principal/Partner | FASLA

As a principal and partner in the firm since 1998, Tadd has the responsibility for the design and management of O2 Design’s (formerly oslund.and.assoc.) largest and most significant projects. Tadd has over 24 years of experience on several projects ranging in size from residential projects, courtyards, and gardens to large campuses and professional sports facilities. His ability to take ideas and develop them into working solutions are outstanding and his passion for construction and technology merge together beautifully during the course of the design process. From early ideas to construction supervision, Tadd’s creativity is apparent. His experience on large, complex site projects and his ability to manage the construction process has contributed to many of the award-winning projects for the firm. Tadd’s positive attitude and uncompromising desire for excellence has made clients, contractors and consultants pleased to have had the experience of working with him. Tadd was honored by the American Society of Landscape Architects by becoming a Fellow in the fall of 2010 based on his outstanding accomplishments and professional excellence of his work.

Sandra Rolph

Principal | ASLA, LEED AP

In addition to a MLA degree from the University of MN, Sandra holds a BS in Environmental Science Hydrology/Climatology, and an MSc in Physical Geography from the University of British Columbia, Canada. Her skill in blending scientific and design thinking makes her an excellent addition to the studio, as does her proficiency in presentation graphics, 3D modeling, and urban design explorations using Revit. Sandra’s involvement on projects ranges from broad-scale master planning to small site design, with a focus on sustainability in corporate/academic campus environments. Sandra blends the worlds of science, and research, and design by contributing her deep understanding of the social and ecological function of the environment and its ethical stewardship to each of her projects. As a LEED AP, Sandra views the green building movement as a great opportunity to enrich our projects with the careful integration of sustainability with artful design and innovation. She works from project inception through LEED certification to ensure that our clients sustainability goals are met, while seeking opportunities to educate the public about the relationship between our natural and built environments.

Han Zhang

Principal | PLA, LEED AP BD+C, USGBC

Han leads a small culturally diverse team at O2 Design that handles projects across various types, scales, and design strategies, ranging from residential courtyards to hundred-acre master plans. She is experienced in project management and works closely with clients to stay on schedule and budget. She applies holistic and systematic thinking to create innovative design solutions to multifaceted challenges and strives to deliver exceptional results on sophisticated projects. Deeply influenced by her dual-culture background, Han brings her unique character, cultural interpretation, and inspiration to her design. Devoted to and passionate about her work, Han pursues simplicity, functionality, and artistry in design.

Mya Kesler

Associate Principal

Mya has over 23 years of landscape design and project management experience, with a multi-disciplinary background of landscape architecture, ecology, and construction. She is accustomed to working on many types and scales of projects, including some of the most complicated and challenging technical projects with cross-functional teams. Mya received her BS in plant biology from the University of Illinois/Champaign Urbana, an MS in Ecological Management from Duke University, and an MLA from University of Minnesota, specializing in the creation of pollinator habitat in urban areas. Before relocating to Minnesota, she founded a landscape design-build firm in the SF Bay Area, managing the sales, design and construction for residential and commercial clients for 14 years. She continues to draw from her background in ecology and vast plant knowledge to design landscapes that support valuable ecosystem services.

Ben Radi

Project Manager

Ben brings a wide variety of experience with world-class projects and clients to O2 design. After earning his master’s degree from the University of Minnesota, he moved to California and worked for 8 years on projects ranging from planned communities and theme parks to luxury resorts and large-scale masterplans. Highly influenced by his background in art, Ben believes that every project deserves the highest level of design consideration, and sees each project, regardless of scale or scope, as an opportunity to create beauty in the world.

Matthew Wilkens

Senior Associate | PLA, ASLA

Knowledgeable, meticulous and an innovative designer, Matt joins O2 Design (formerly oslund.and.assoc.) with proven project experience and design leadership skills. He is a dedicated landscape architect possessing extensive technical and analytical site sensibilities with over 22 years of demonstrated success in creating exceptionally designed outdoor spaces and environments. He brings a passion for creative and bold site design and demonstrates a deep understanding of the relationship between design and constructability. His body of work is extensive and has been recognized by ASLA Minnesota with several design awards. He has also spent time on the University of Minnesota’s Design College Design Student and Alumni Board as a past President supporting young design professionals.

Matthew Stewart

Senior Associate | PLA

Matthew received his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree from Iowa State University.
During his education in Iowa, he was a crew leader for a local landscape company, giving him valuable, hands-on experience and an adept understanding of the built environment. This opportunity has led him to strive for a technical understanding of the design process.

At O2 design, his work experience focuses on the relationships between design intent and material assemblies, bringing extensive innovation, detail craft, and methodology to all projects. His work is guided by the desire to have projects function well to parallel the aesthetic integrity of the work.

Matthew Kessler

Senior Associate

Matthew embeds a curiosity for the built & natural worlds into the detailed minutia of each project he works on from concept through construction. After studying music production at an independent music college in St. Paul, MN, he received both his Bachelor of Environmental Design (2012) and Master of Landscape Architecture (2014) from the University of Minnesota, winning the coveted Capstone Award. Matthew spent the first 5 years of his career in Dallas, Texas designing & managing large scale master planned community projects, urban plazas and city parks projects. He brings a focus to O2 design on 3D visualization as a design tool fundamentally transforming our production methodology. His experience was instrumental in achieving multiple communication awards from the Texas chapter of the ASLA. He was also named Adjunct of the Year 2018 for his work at the University of Texas – Arlington in the College of Architecture, Planning & Public Affairs teaching digital modelling and post production techniques. He believes that people deserve to live among beautiful thoughtful places and that landscape architecture is uniquely situated as a profession to be the most innovative transformative force for the future.

Andrew Beck

Senior Associate

Andrew received his Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Minnesota. His outgoing personality, strong work ethic, and commitment to excellence finds him at home with the O2 Design (formerly oslund.and.assoc.) team. Andrew graduated with honors from Bates College with an undergraduate degree in history. His love of ancient places and his archaeological field experience have inspired a life-long desire to reveal and evoke unique spirits of place through design. After graduating from Bates, Andrew worked in education as an AmeriCorps volunteer, special education paraprofessional, and elementary school teacher. Additionally, Andrew studied and earned a technical diploma in carpentry. Because of his diverse work and educational experiences, Andrew brings a unique conceptual framework, as well as practical knowledge, to his work at O2 Design.

Brooks Ostendorf

Senior Associate | PLA

From the outset of his career, which began after earning a BLA at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and brought him to firms in Los Angeles, Portland, and Minneapolis, Brooks has had a keen eye for vibrant design and an understanding of how landscape architecture can make for more active and healthy places.  He has managed a wide array of award-winning projects from design to construction, with experience spanning higher education, office campuses, parks, and civic buildings. The throughline of Brooks’ experience is a desire to work with thoughtful people to create impactful spaces for the people and places that need them most. He is a careful listener who believes that close collaboration with others is essential to arriving at considered design solutions.

Yuqi Yan

Senior Associate | ASLA

Yuqi joined O2 Design (formerly oslund.and.assoc.) in 2017 and quickly grew to become a crucial member of the professional team. Yuqi graduated from the University of Minnesota with a master’s degree in landscape architecture. Living in multiple countries throughout her life stimulated her interest in cultural diversity and community engagement in landscape design. Coming from a background in environmental art design, she infuses the design with creative thinking and artistic inspiration. Her passion and work experience have also ignited her interests in urban hydrological systems and ecologically-sensitive design. As a valued design team member, Yuqi is detail-oriented and work-focused; she consistently delivers exceptional work on complex construction projects.

Shuwen Ye

Associate

Shuwen is a recent graduate from the University of Pennsylvania with a master’s degree in landscape architecture. In her master thesis work, she focused on post-disaster recovery and ecological restoration in coastal Ecuador, she continues this connection post graduation. Shuwen also holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture, thus bringing the benefit of a multi-disciplined perspective to projects, conscious of the connection between landscape and architecture. In the design process, Shuwen excels at unearthing the potential within each location through thoughtful research and creative design strategies.

Minh Nguyen

Associate

Minh earned his Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Minnesota after he had finished the undergraduate program in Landscape Architecture from the University of Architecture of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. His curiosity about urban nature degradation urges him to keep exploring and practicing more about the solutions of refining open space for people and bringing everyone back to nature. His capstone project for the graduate program was to rejuvenate the streetscape of Broadway Avenue in North Minneapolis that refines the empty parking spaces as open spaces to embrace the community’s cultures and connect everyone together, as well as address the urban heat island issue in the cities which to reintroduce vegetation and trees to the streets to reduce the extreme heat. As a goal to become a valuable team member, he always tries his best to learn and listen from others that help him improve his skill sets and produce effective work.

Corey Holleman

BIM Coordinator

Corey started his experience as an NCMA and ICPI certified Landscape Designer/Installer in Virginia. Specializing working on residential projects, he used this experience to build extensive knowledge on paver systems, retaining walls, as well as other landscape design elements.
Corey joined O2 after recently graduating from Dunwoody College of Technology. Having wide-ranging skills in all things Revit, he is able to efficiently coordinate and control live BIM models. Corey uses a mixture of creative and technical processes to enable designs to be effectively communicated and displayed.

Greg Niles

Associate

Greg brings a unique skill set to O2 Design as his education is in architecture and he has extensive experience as a BIM coordinator on large, multi-disciplinary projects. This experience and education help to facilitate an efficient dynamic between landscape and various disciplines, including architecture. His time at O2 Design gives him an understanding of the importance of incorporating the landscape team early and throughout the design process, in a wholistic way. This is ever more important as architecture is striving for environmentally conscious and sustainable design. Greg continues to work on landscape-forward design projects as well as various architecture projects including drafting, design, and modeling.

John Pierce

Associate

John Pierce received his Master of Landscape Architecture degree at the University of Minnesota. He has public and private sector experience planning and executing urban public realm projects in the Northeast and Midwest. John obtained his Master of Urban Planning from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, winning the APA Student Award for his capstone work. He has studied landscapes, urbanism, and design across Europe and Southeast Asia. A creative yet pragmatic thinker, John brings a multidisciplinary sensibility to modern landscapes.

Michael Hill

Finance Administrator

Michael Hill is the finance administrator with O2 Design. In this role, Michael monitors the day-to-day financial operations within the company, participates in strategic data and project analysis, and coordinates the proposals and contracts with business partners. He specializes in financial analysis and effectively manages projects including corporate data centers, commercial buildings, and private residences. Michael helps clients synthesize complex data into actionable information and brings strong communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills to the team. Michael graduated from The University of the Nations through Youth with a Mission in Townsville, Australia. During his education, Michael lived in Papua New Guinea with a group that traveled to different villages to restructure freshwater sourcing, perform cataract surgery, and provide medical supplies. He is passionate about serving others in his community and around the world.
