The Women’s Correctional Facility in Shakopee is unique in that it is the only women’s prison in the State of Minnesota. The Garden of Time, located in the inner courtyard of the facility, is a space of multiplicities. Five distinct spaces within the garden work to visually engage the inmates as they view it from inside. These spaces consist of variations on the maze. Walking the labyrinth, physically or from the mind's eye, becomes a contemplative spiritual journey, allowing the user to ponder the twist and turns of life and to address them in silent prayer. The garden thus becomes a metaphor for the choices, twists and turns an inmate must make to achieve the goal of freedom. The Garden of Time’s associated elements define a way in which to integrate the landscape into the inmate’s daily life by creating a series of gardens which promote reflection, contemplation and celebration.
