At the Minnetonka Center for the Arts, the landscape and site are designed to merge the geometry of the building complex with the surrounding fragmented rural landscape to heighten the instructional objectives of the art center. The allee and entry drive mirror the geometry of the large art wall and the central gathering courtyard to provide a glimpse of the center's purpose to cars moving past the complex. The allee also serves as a spatial divider - creating a public space that contains the main entry, dining terraces, and sculpture garden, and an instructional space that contains the outdoor classrooms, loading dock, and student/staff parking. The instructional spaces of the building complex are dominated by the outdoor studio courtyards. These courtyards reveal the process of making art by allowing the visitor or student to see into the studio spaces from the entry drives and parking lots. The site and landscape components of the project are designed to reflect the intentions of the building and merge the process of making art with the surrounding landscape.
