2003 St. Paul Heritage Preservation Commission Award of Recognition: Restoration of the original fabric of the St. Paul Central Library, St. Paul , MN. Presented by the St. Paul Heritage Preservation Commission and the St. Paul Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
This project is the redesign of an existing green courtyard space formed by the wings of the St. Paul Central Library building. The new courtyard was envisioned to invite entry and serve as a semi-public gathering space for a variety of functions, from everyday library patrons to organized group events. The site reflects the Italianate Architecture of the building in its similarity to courtyard spaces found in many Italian villas. The hallmark of these spaces is simplicity, symmetry, and clear spatial volumes. The simplicity of the design is evident in the strong geometric forms of the arching ramps, rectilinear terraces and converging walkways. The composition is a merging of semicircular forms over rectilinear planes. Bilateral symmetry is used to reflect the existing building design and to highlight the new entry to the building, which lies at the beginning of the axis. These geometries coordinate to create several clear spatial volumes that function for a variety of uses while satisfying circulation and aesthetic needs. The use of simple materials that reflect the palette of the existing historic building has created a unique environment for downtown St. Paul that will serve as an iconographic landscape for the next century of the St. Paul Central Library.
