2002 Design Merit Award for Unbuilt Works
Presented by the American Society of Landscape
Architects, Minnesota Chapter.
The Minnesota Orchestra Outdoor Performing Arts Center will be a unique place; a blend of art and aesthetic, function and ecology, situated atop 325 acres. This space has been designed to accommodate smaller crowds of 3,000-8,000 for orchestral events, and 19,000 for rock events. There will be paved parking for approximately 3,000 cars, the rest of the parking will be located on flatly-graded, large expanses of meadow. The art of balancing cut & fill is realized in how the theater was designed to be nestled into a man-made 60' berm, providing a sense of containment and enclosure. Extensive parcels of planned wetlands act as stormwater treatment areas, serving multiple functions of retaining and cleansing runoff from the site, as well as providing a beautifully aesthetic entry experience.
