Augsburg College is a liberal arts institution set in the heart of a great metropolitan center. With upcoming changes to its urban context, including the new Central Corridor light rail transit line (2014), and the developing Cedar Riverside neighborhood, Augsburg is entering a new phase in its own planning and development strategy. The Master phases (in 5 year increments) mark a significant transition from a campus that is currently suburban in character, to a contemporary urban campus that leads the community into the mid-21st century. Surface parking lots give way to new academic facilities and functional campus green space. Neighbors are invited to engage with the campus community at events in the ‘new Old Main’, in on-campus community gardens, and along the campus walks that converge at Murphy Park. Vehicular access remains open through campus — alongside a more safe and enjoyable pedestrian environment. Augsburg’s new urban identity will be realized both on the ground, and through the college’s continued commitment to faith, education, sustainability, and community leadership.
