The Master Plan for the thirty-acre Appleton Memorial Park and Arboretum Garden recalls the diversity of Wisconsin native plant communities and the unique cultures of the immigrants that settled the land. Before and after European settlement, Wisconsin was a mosaic of native plants and forest communities, complimented by lakes and glacial features – a landscape rich in possibilities for human development. By evoking the past, this plan will help the Memorial Park Arboretum & Gardens to achieve its mission of fostering harmony between humans and their environment. The Memorial Park and Arboretum Garden includes boardwalks and walking trails that gently guide the visitor along a recreated stream, a wetland, and through hardwood forests that grow in various regions of the state. By recreating lost ecological environments and plant communities, the Master Plan is upholding a key purpose of the Memorial Park Arboretum & Gardens; that being the preservation, propagation and protection of native plants.
